Postmarks and Cancelations

Artistic Expression and Technological Advances
Bottom of page...

The two basic parts of most postal markings are the date stamp, which shows (at a minimum) the date and location that the letter was received by the postal service, and the cancellation or "killer", which prevents the stamps or notices of payment from being cleaned and re-used. Stamps were first introduced in the United States in 1847, and numerous methods of cancellation were devised, some quite artistic, some less so. These pages show examples of the "other postal art"--cancellation.
